Canva is my absolute favourite place to create images for social media. It’s free to use, you can choose from their professional templates or start a design from scratch.
Canva have created professional layouts, or templates using the right size for everything from Facebook covers to Facebook ads and posts – so all you need to worry about is choosing a template you like.
You can upload your own images and use them in the ready made templates, or you can buy one of their stock images for as little as $1 per image.
Here’s how you get started:
1. Choose a Type
Got to www.Canva.com and create an account. Then log in and you’ll see your start screen which will look something like the picture below.
For this example we’ll create a Facebook post image – when you hover your mouse pointer over the options available you’ll see the exact dimensions of the templates measured in pixels and the names tell you which type of image you’ll create.
2. Choose a template you like
On the left side of the page you’ll see the ready made templates Canva have prepared for you. Some of the templates use paid for elements or images – you can recognize the paid for templates by the little dollar sign that pops up when you click the template.
When you’ve found a template you like, doubleclick – and it will pop up big on the work space to the right.
3. Change the text
Now it’s time to change the text in the template to something that relates your your business. Simply double click the text to select it, and start typing. When you have selected the text you’ll see a pop up menu where you can choose to change the font, size or colour.
4. Remove unwanted elements
Sometimes a template comes with extra bits and pieces that you don’t want to keep in your final design. This template, for example, came with a cupcake image that I wanted to remove. To remove the element, simply click on it – and click the ‘delete’ icon.
5. Add new elements, like picture frames
On the left side, when you click inside the search box you’ll see a category called frames. Click the category, and when you find a frame you like – double click it or drag and drop it onto the workspace.
You can resize the frame by first clicking it, and then dragging the corners until it’s just the right size.
6. Add an image to the frame
Now you can choose to use either use one of your own photographs, or you can pay to use one of Canva’s stock images. To upload your own image, simply click the upload button and follow the instructions. Alternatively, type in keywords in the search box – for example ‘cute dog’ to have a look at Canva’s stock images. When you’ve found the right image, simply drag and drop it into the picture frame.
You can add a photo filter effect to the image by clicking the image – and clicking the ‘filter’ button.
You can re-size the image inside the frame by clicking it & dragging the corners until it’s the right size.
7. Your design is done!
8. Download, Save & Share
To download and save your design – click the download button in the top right corner. Choose ‘as an image’.
If you have used any premium, paid for elements – Canva will now ask for payment. Make sure you read and understand your image licence.
As you can see it’s quite easy to create your own shareable Facebook images using Canva!
